New Technologies offer new opportunities
Steve Crimi Article for Electrical Contractors

At one point there was a clear distinction between what was considered electrical work and what was considered low voltage work. The lines continue to blur, and most electrical contractors are now realizing this.

Today's buildings cannot function with a power system alone. Other intelligent systems are increasingly important to the building's functions.

We are witnessing changes today that will impact the future of the electrical contracting business in a big way. One can either resist the changes or embrace them.

Today, entire buildings are being wired with MC Cable. This is just one of the many innovations that will have profound implications to the electrical trade, and how future electricians are trained. After all, conduit as we know it will not be extensively utilized in the future.

There is an interesting dynamic today that may be a first for the electrical industry. Although we are seeing developments that may threaten traditional "pipe and wire", electrical firms willing to embrace technology, re-structure their business models and properly train their workforce may realize future growth, and more importantly – future profits.

As electrical contractors, it is prudent to be cautiously optimistic about new technology; however, it is becoming increasingly unwise to resist it. The industry will face more change in the next ten years than it has in the last 50 years. Photo-Voltaic, D.C. Distribution, Solid-State Lighting, Fuel cells and EV charging stations are all becoming familiar terms in the industry.

LED board with pin and socket connector increases LED efficiency

Raled Ltherm logo

Saint Petersburg FL (March 18, 2011) LumaStream,LLC www.LumaStream.com, announced today it has co-developed a pin and socket LED light board with Raled,LLC www.raled.com. Steven Crimi, CEO of LumaStream stated, "By utilizing Raled's patented LTHERM® technology, we can remove heat from our light boards very effectively. Heat is the killer of LEDs. LumaStream® integral light fixtures combine the heat sink with the actual fixture housing insuring a very effective path for removing heat. With our new LTHERM® based pin and socket light board we will have a total solution with the flexibility to easily install or remove the light board. This will allow the lighting designer to choose the color temperature and optical pattern best suited for the application even after they are installed."

"There are virtually no restrictions on the design of a LED driver or light engine utilizing LTHERM® PCB Technology. LTHERM® is the designer's choice for LED thermal management," stated Kurt Storey, founder of Raled.

Mr. Crimi also stated "We are keeping a close eye on the progress of the Zhaga consortium and their efforts to adopt a standard socket for a light board. Our solution will address the need for a socket type platform for smaller solid-state luminaries that will eventually replace fixtures currently utilizing MR16, R-20, R-30, Par-20, Par-30 and GU-10 based lamps. This may very well be adopted as the industry standard."

LED Rediness for Market

Electrical contractors have seen the bright lights of opportunity borne by involvement in lighting specification and installation. Over time, market forces have drawn ECs further into the fold, allowing them to increasingly influence brands and make specification decisions and, ultimately, become very vital decisionmakers when it comes to lighting-related projects. To highlight the latest developments in the lighting industry, ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR conducted a survey of more than 700 readers.

According to respondants, LED trends are something to keep an eye on. One-third of electrical contractors say that LEDs are poised to replace incandescent lamps, compared with 23 percent thinking LEDs are currently ready to replace compact fluorescents and another 19 percent suggesting LEDs are ready to replace fluorescent lamps. An additional one-third of those surveyed think that LEDs will be ready to replace each of these lamp types within the next one or two years. The remaining survey respondents see LEDs becoming more viable later, or they "don't know" when viability will occur. READ THE FULL ARTICLE
